LONG ISLAND, N. Y. – An accident on Long Island’s Southern State Parkway resulted in the death of four people and one critically injured reported the New York Post.
At around 5:10 a.m. on Tuesday, a 33-year-old was driving in the wrong direction for a short period of time before crashing head-on into a Nissan Rogue carrying four people, according to New York State Police. The 33-year-old driver was the sole occupant in the 1998 Toyota Camry and three individuals in the Nissan Rogue we all pronounced dead at the scene. The fourth occupant in the Nissan Rogue was critically injured and transported to Nassau University Medical Center.
The New York Post reports that the individuals in the Nissan Rogue were believed to be family members traveling to work when the accident occurred.
A third car was involved in the accident, a 2011 Suzuki SUV. The driver attempted to avoid the wreck, but was not successful and also struck the Toyota. A motorcyclist also attempted to avoid the pile-up but lost control and hit debris from the crash. The driver of the Suzuki was the only person that escaped without any injury. The motorcyclist was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
By the time first responders were able to pull victims out from the cars, a fire had erupted. The police believe the wrong-way driver likely entered the parkway from Exit 30 or 31, both of which are less than a mile from the scene of the accident.
Two minutes before the accident, the police received phone calls from drivers on the road reporting the wrong-way driver. After the call, five troopers on the Southern State Parkway responded to the call. Unfortunately, they were unable to reach the wrong-way driver before the accident.
There is an ongoing investigation to determine whether the 33-year old driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
